Question, if pulling him out would break his legs....wouldn't you rather have two broken legs than be dead?
His rib cage would also have been hooked by the rock as they tried to pull him back. And they figured the shock of breaking his legs would kill him. Only way he was coming out was in pieces. He was too weak to assist.

If a drilling rig had magically been in place when he got stuck I wonder if it could drill down to his stuck location in 4-6 hours to extract him? They could have placed a tracker by his feet to determine his exact location.

Yeah me too. The thought of being sealed in that tight passage and rotting away is horrifying. And he was only 26 - his whole life wasted. And I recall it was his brother's idea that they hit the cave. The brother picked John and his wife up at the airport and said "Hey can I borrow John for a couple of hours to go explore Nutty Putty?". The wife agrees and off they go.
