terrible gas mileage. dont know why!

hey i have a 1998 ford contour svt. Ive done the calculations at least 5 times now and no matter how low I shift and making sure to follow the speed limits i always only get at most 230 kilometers with a full tank if im lucky. so thats only about 143 miles. i know that this isnt right because i had a big taurus with a bigger engine and better mileage then that, so is anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it? please

You have a leaking injector, MAF problems, or a serious tune issue. The 98 models had wiring issues where the shielding came off and could cause the car to run poorly.

What does the exhaust tips look like? Does the oil look bad after only 500 miles? Check for fault codes, there should be something amiss there.
