I have about 1500 or so miles on my t56 magnum. Shifts great, smooth as hell and have been running e85 for about 300-400 miles now shifting the crap out of it and its amazing. Now for results. I have a 3.73 rear end with the 2.97 first gear option t56. I ran a buddy of mine who I ran before the t56 an on e85 I got him by an easy 2 cars. Off E we were dead even. Now let me say first second and third seem nice but fourth I feel is way to long( for n/a but with blower would be perfect). On mt82 str8 off the hit I would start pulling from forty till about 140. With the t56 and same mods we did a 50 roll and we were pretty dead even till I threw 4th gear that's when he started edging away from me about half a car. Then when he threw fifth I caught him and passed him by about half a car. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd feel nice but I feel like it falls too low when i throw fourth. Oh well now I just need a blower or nitrous to make it up.

Not surprised about your impressions and results. Now go try to convince all the Boss owners who really want one! Apples and oranges, I know...

You can try the 4.10. If you want to swap rears pm me. I wouldn't mind trying 3.73

I also want to switch to one so I have a SFI bell housing. But I don't want to run a 4.10 or 4.30 gear with that trans. Mainly because of fuel economy and highway speeds.

I want to see track results so we can see more of the story. Like will 60' times be slower because of the gearing in 1st now. As well as 330', 1/8th and 1/4 times and mph. Sadly I think it will be off with the Magnum. :/

What is the max speed in each gear. In my mt82 with 3.31s and boss manifold reving to about 7800 I around 78 in 2nd, 110 in 3rd and 140 in 4th....to me that is perfect.

Here is a great gear ratio calculator. Enter the info and it spits lots of numbers out for you. haha

MT82
1st - 3.66
2nd - 2.43
3rd - 1.69
4th - 1.32
5th - 1.00
6th - 0.65

Magnum XL w/ 2.97 1st gear
2.97:1st
2.07:2nd
1.43:3rd
1.00:4th
0.80:5th
0.62:6th

Magnum XL w/ 2.66 1st gear
2.66:1st
1.78:2nd
1.30:3rd
1.00:4th
0.74:5th
0.50:6th

You really cant compare the 2 since the Mt82 has stupid high gearing.

With the magnum you will need to gear the car like a traditional mustang. NA will require 4.10 at least and my pick would be a 4.30

The magum has a lower over drive then the MT82 as well so you will not notice nearly as much.

Glad your happy with the way it shifts.

Keep in mind

4th in the magnum is 1-1 and 5th in the MT82 is 1-1

Just playing with the gearing calculator I posted above I looked at a few options.

I currently have a 3.73 and 28" slick with my MT82. What closely matches that in engine rpm & mph for drag racing is a 26" tire, 4.56 gear and Magnum using the 2.66 1st gear. Speeds were close in 1st gear with the Magnum having a little higher mph. The top gears I use/would use in 1/4 mile racing, 4th gear (1.32:1) with the MT82 and 4th gear (1:1) in the mangum, are very close in mph at 7000 rpm.

With the 27" tall street tires the MT82 OD ratio, 2,000 engine rpm highway cruising speed and 3.73 it comes out to about 66 mph. With the Magnum .50 OD the 2,000 engine rpm and 4.30 it comes out to 70 mph. Not bad at all.

If you have a magnum just think of it like a 96-01 cobra i used to run 4.30s in my 97 cobra every day when it was my daily. Once i had a beater i put 4.56s in it with a 26 inch tall slick. Now that car was fun to drive!!

Yeah, stop light to stop light there is a lot of quick revs and gear changes! :rolling:

I was more worried about lots of rpm on the highway as this is my daily driver. I do a lot of highway driving with it. But with the .50 overdrive and 4.56 gear cruising in 6th is actually better than the 3.73 and MT82 OD. Plus a SFI bell is a huge plus in my book.

Looks like I talked myself into a purchase with you guys. haha

it would take 4.56 gears to make the T56 act like the MT82 but your cruise speed would suck. time for nitrous or a PD blower.

Not really, you will just use the OD gears more with the Magnum combo. With a 3.73 and 27" in 5th with the MT82 would be 43 mph at 2,000 and 54 at 2,500 rpm. With the Magnum (2.66 1st) and 4.56 in 5th you would be 47 mph at 2,000 and 59 mph at 2,500.

In 6th gear in both cars with the same gearing as above you would have 66 mph at 2,000 and 82 mph at 2,500 with the MT82. The Magnum would be 70 mph at 2,000 and 88 mph at 2,500. The deeper OD ratio in the Magnum really helps out.

With the right trans gearing, ring & pinion and tire diameter you can get close in gearing to the MT82. Assuming in racing you want to match 1-4 of the two transmission. Then have the benefits of the deeper OD.

I understand how gearing works I was just posting my impressions. I'm just debating on what gear to with. I wanna do 4.10's but part of me wants to say f it and go 4.30's. This is my daily driver and I do a lot of highway driving plus the E85 doesn't help at all. But we'll c where I go from here.

What rpm are you on the top of fourth?

7300 or so. i could go all the way to 7700 but im sure that my engine wont survive that for more than a pass or two. i would like to swap rear ends with someone thats n/a and wants 4.10. my rear ends. if not ill have to just open it up and put new gears.

i just checked with a gear calculator and the very most gear i can run is 3.55
