seeing how the stock alt. was the biggest pain in the ass to remove, i'm in the process of removing the 99-01 alt and can't figure out how to get it off, do you have to take the coolant crossover out or is there a way to do it without removing that?

Once you have the belt off, and two lower 10mm bolts, remove the top four 10mm bolts, and you should get it off without removing the crossover ( if your worried about having to drain the coolant and burp the system). Remove alt harness, and pull off the H shaped alt mounting bracket.
You should be able to wiggle the alt out at that point. You may need to slightly bend up the two tabs on the crossover, that help hold down the crossover. Just use caution and common sense.
