Took the car to work yesterday with no issues at all but when I came to a red light at the end of my block I noticed an awful sound, sounds like a bearing to me but my old man seems to think its an idler pulley, I believe its almost 100% the Whipple. Couldnt really pinpoint the noise since I was in a rush to go somewhere but the sound hurts my soul :(, let me know what you guys think is up with this sound, the blower has about 500 miles on it btw. If you guys could give me your 2 cents about what you think the issue might be I would really appreciate it!

Thanks for any input

Some research on my behalf is pointing to a bad coupler.

"From what I've researched it appears that there is a plastic coupler that is on the inside of the SC that connects the output from the pulley to the input of the SC turbine screws (not sure of exact terminology, but you get the general idea)...anyway, the coupler wears over time and the holes where the pins seat get elongated or enlarged which is what cause the SC to have a rattling sound at idle. I will be ordering a SC rebuild kit (new bearings and coupler and oil and seals) soon and will let you know how it turns out. My car is in storage right now for the winter so it will be a good project to work on. Will let you know in about a month how things go. If I think of it, I'll try to take pictures of the project as it moves along." http://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/f93/supercharger-making-loud-rattling-noise-69949/

Would you still drive it with a bad coupler? (not beat the balls off of it of course)

They just told be it cant be a coupler because GT500 blowers dont have one being that theyre direct drive, they said to try raising the RPM by a few hundred and if the sound goes away then its just characteristic of the blower but I've never heard a healthy twin screw sound like that

use a piece of wood or a long screwdriver/hammer and place it against the snout. put your ear against it and try isolate the sound. it'll resonate through the tool.

could also pop off your accessories belt to narrow it down.

That's easy to figure out....take the belt of your blower and start it, listen to idle, if noise is gone than its obviously blower. If not than you might have bigger issues, idler pulls don't make that noise....

I just bought a cheapo mechanic's stethoscope from Harbor Freight. I put it on my stock s/c and the bearing is super quiet. I did find my 90mm idler upgraded pulley is making noise though. It's interesting to put the 'scope on different parts of the engine, and hearing all the different noises. Doing this early, trains your ear for when there really is a problem. Even with this cheap 'scope, you can vividly hear the noise of whatever you put it on. I used to use a long 3/8" extension, but this works much better.

Took a look at my blower and it had literally not a drop of oil in it, but it was at proper level a few days ago but I havent done any WOT pulls or driven the car hard since picking it up from the shop, Whipple told me to pull it off and send it to them and they will replace the bearings and seals if they aere found to be defective, but I could imagine theres definitely internal damage from having run dry, we'll see what happens from here :rollseyes
