Hatch car. Engine setup should depend on intended use. Play around with different combo's weights to see how they affect the vehicles manners on track. Stick the one in the car that makes the most sense as a balance between handling and power.
What I'd really like to see from a project car like that is something that is a blast on track, but can also be enjoyed as a weekend cruiser. Which for me means, full interior (including the back seat for kids), A/C, heat, radio etc. IMO it's OK for kids to have to climb around a cage though.
