So I was putting my lug nuts back on after working on my car and the lug nut snapped in half on the wheel stud. Anyone have and ideas on how to get it off without drilling out the stud? lug 1.JPGlug 2.JPGlug 3.JPG

You might have to buy a small chisel and split it, not the most appealing idea of swinging a hammer towards a pretty rim but it might come to that.

As stated before get a socket that is barely smaller then the lug nut. I would heat it up with a heat gun or propane torch to expand the socket. Before tapping it into place use a can or 2 of compressed air upside down on the lug nut to shrink it.

You need to get a six pt socket. The black impact sockets are softer metal and will do better. Chrome sockets are usually hardened and thin, more likely to split. In the future, be sure to use a deep well socket and get it all the way onto the lug nut. Good luck,

They make kits that remove busted lugs, or lock lugs you lost the key for. I bought a kit at sears for 30 bucks.

Thanks for the help guys I will try all of these. I found an old forum post somewhere and someone had the same issue with the same lug nuts. He ended up using a 3/4 inch hole saw without the pilot bit to get his off but that will be my last resort.

My problem was due to putting two lug nuts on the same stud by mistake there was no getting a socket on it!!!

I used a 5/8 hole saw (cheap ACE Hardware) and drilled it out to "just" clear the stud threads, the 3/4 "seemed" to large -didn't try it, figured had one "easy" shot at it. Also I needed more depth in the hole saw to clear the longer aftermarket stud's length.

Driiled the depth where the drill bit could be seen in the set screw hole:

You can really see how a socket wasn't an option -mushroomed:

It went easier then expected 5 mins, took longer to drill the hole saw out 30m-1hr.
