Thought I would write up a thread of differences between the 1996-2004 4.6 mustang. I know that I will miss a lot of stuff and feel free to add some of the differences to the thread.

First part of the thread will consist of some standard spec stuff then it will be followed with "mechanical build" differences. I would like to keep this consolidated to GT models only....in regards to "mechanical build" differences.

The intent and progress flow of this thread is to outline changes from a previous year to the next. So, 1996 will be compared to 1995. 1997 will be compared to 1996...so forth and so on.

So, here we go

1996

In 1996 the mustang GT was running into its 3rd year of production on the FOX4 or SN-95 platform. SN95 is merely a code name given internally at ford during design phase. They have the same types of code names for all vechile line ups...only difference is, not that many people care what a Ford Taurus is nicknamed...so, not many people know what it is.

In 1996 the "GTS" model "GT" was discounted from Ford. The "GTS" model was a package that Ford offered only in 1995 as a car that would be between a base model V-6 and a GT. Basically the "GTS" was a V-6 trim car with a GT drivetrain. This model designation was cut out in 1996, replacing it with the 248A package (still the same model just no longer called GTS). The 4.6 SOHC engine was introduced to the SN-95 platform in 1996. The Horse power rating for this year remained the same as the 1995 5.0 GT @ 215 hp and a torque rating of 285.

Very little styling changes between the 1995 5.0 model and the 1996 model. But, one of the most recognized differences are the tail lights. In 1996 the body side of the car retained the small air vents in front of the rear tires as the 1994-1995 but the tail light lens went from a horizontal 3 lens pattern to a Vertical 3 lens pattern.

This has become the standard of recognizing a Non-PI 4.6 from PI 4.6 just at first glance. When I first see an SN-95 style coming down the road...first thing my eyes catch are the air vents on the side...this sets a mental placement of year range...then I check out the tail lights....this always tells me what engine is in it. A lot of other styling cues to separate them but that's the first thing my eyes pull toward.

Because the "mod" engines were taller than the pushrod V-8, Ford had to redesign the front chassis crossmember, reposition the steering rack and lower front suspension arms, change engine mounting points, and devise a more compact brake booster. Also started attaching the Alternator, A/C compressor, and Power-steering pump directly to the blocks reduced underhood clutter.

Along with the introduction of the 4.6 SOHC modular engine. The ignition system was changed. Ford dumped the distributor ignition and went with a EDIS system (Electronic Distributorless Ignition System). This type of EDIS system for 1996 was a "waste-spark" method of spark distribution.

Basically, the EDIS for 1996 ignition had two coil paks. 4 spark plug wires for each coil pak. Each cylinder is paired with its companion cylinder in its firing order. So when the cylinder under compression fires...it also simultaneously sends a spark to its companion cylinder that is on the exhaust stroke. There is no need for the exhaust to have a spark at the same time...Hence "waste-spark" ignition. That's just the way a waste-spark system works and is designed. So, in 1996 the 4.6 went from Distributor to a Distributorless "waste-spark" ignition. You will see two coil pak, and 8 ignition wire (or plug wires) running to 8 spark plugs. Waste-spark firing order is 1-6, 5-3, 4-7, 2-8. So, Coil port 1 and 6 will always send a spark at the same time as will 5 & 3, 4 & 7, 2 & 8. This is not to be confused with the 4.6 firing order. Firing order for the 4.6 ignition is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

What is a Companion Cylinder?

Companion cylinder simply means this: In a V-8 you will always have two pistons and rods traveling in the same direction. Only difference is, one of the pistons will be on whats called a "Power" stroke and the other will be on whats called an "exhaust" stroke. (That is only being used as a point of reference, there are four different stokes involved to complete a cycle of operation in an engine.) But, both of the pistons are traveling up and down together at the same time.....the two pistons and rods will be on opposite sides of the block from one another.

Below shows the firing order. You will note: the reason each coil pak has wires that run on both sides of the block, instead of just using the coil pak on the left of the block to spark the left side and the coil pak on the right to just have wires running to the right side of the block. Its because of the Waste-Spark" design. Each coil pak is responsible for sending out its own waste spark. So, the Coil pak on the left has to send out its own "Hot ignition" spark to cylinder one while sending out the wasted spark on the other side of the block to cylinder six. This is why you have plug wires criss-crossing the block and the coil paks. For giggles you can use the picture below to see where the companion cylinders are and the firing order.

The pony grille emblem got a mesh backdrop. Ford also brought us the beloved PATS system (passive anti-theft system). The PATS system was standard on GT and Cobra models...it was optional on base mode...V-6

Ford went to the T-45 Manual Transmission from a T-5 and Changed over to the 4R70W from the AOD-E for Automatic transmissions.

1997

1997 the mustang GT was not changed from 1996. Those cars are absolutely the same with an exception of losing the Honeycomb backdrop behind the running pony in the grill that was introduced in 1996. A few paint codes were introduced in 97 while some had been dropped. Most notable appeared to be Aztec Gold, coming in as haveing the lowest production paint code. A whopping 1,135 Mustangs sold with that color. (includes all models)

1998

1998 seemed to be an odd year in my mind. I personally feel you have 96-97, 98, 99-04 model mustangs. Just seemed like 1998 had a lot of things that are the same but different if that makes any sense. I will do my best to describe differences in this model year but I'm almost positive I will miss a number of them.

A lot of people clam that the 1998 Mustang was the first year of the T-45 transmission. They are both correct and wrong on this account. Tremic purchased rights from Borg & Warner for the T-45. So, in 1998....the Mustang GT got a "Tremic" T-45 transmission. Power rating also jumped in 1998 to 225 hp and 290 torque. The increase in HP from 96-97....from my understanding is because of an updated exhaust manifold. However, it seems Ford did some strange things to these cars in 1998 and it very well may be a compilation of a few things.

The fuel system on a 1998 Mustang GT has become one of the largest mysteries for me. The fuel rails are not the same as 96-97 or 99+. It has a different fuel pump like a returnless style system but its a return system. So, 1998 mustang GT's use a returnless style fuel pump and basket but is a return system. The FPR (fuel pressure regulator) is also welded on the fuel rail. Another fun little fact...the fuel filler neck grommet is unique to the 1998 mustang.

The Dash clock Pod was dropped in 1998. Cup holders are also added to the center console. a GT Sport Group arrived offering five-spoke 17-inch wheels, engine-oil cooler, and hood and front-fender stripes. It is also my understanding that 1998 was the last year for an ash tray.

Anyone with more information for the 1998 GT, please chime in.

1999

1999 was the arrival of the New Edge Mustang. Ford also decided this would be the 35th anniversary edition. I am personally pleased to see Ford finally draw a line in the sand and call something an Anniversary year. For the 30th Anniversary in 1994, all they did was introduce the new FOX4 or SN-95 mustang. No special badging or markings anywhere to be seen. Just a release party. For the 25th Anniversary. They also just had a party but they did change the running pony emblem found on the fox body mustangs dash to say
25 years". This was put on models built between March 27, 1989, and the end of model-year 1990. For the 20th Anniversary, Ford went all out in my mind...They did a special edition 1984 GT350. Only made a little over 5000 of them. So, being 15 years later it was nice to see ford finally start giving the Mustang its credit on an anniversary and not dividing the year anymore for this recognition. In 1999 All mustang were giving badges with 35th anniversary and 35th annerveisry instrument cluster bezel. While all 1999 mustangs are recognized and labeled 35th anniversary. A limited 35th anniversary model was offered as option 54Y and only available on a GT.

54Y option included: hood scoop, side scoops, different rocker side moldings, polished wheels w/ black inserts, black hood decal, silver/aluminum colored dash & shifter knob, different rear wing, special logo floor mats, silver leather door inserts, silver leather trimmed seats, black honeycomb inserts between rear taillights. This is not to be confused with the simple side badging on ALL '99 Mustangs that represent the 35th Anniversary of Mustang.

Aside from an "Anniversary package" being offered. We received the new design update called the "New Edge". I have always been partial to the "New Edge" design and think the name sums up the new design very well.

The rounded lines of the 1994 to 1998-era were replaced by sharper, crisper lines and creases. The only body surface that remained unchanged was the roofline. Changes to the body included a nonfunctional hood scoop and rear deck lid made of a sheet molded compound to save weight. The rear wheel vents are now non-functional...(wish they would have left it functional)....but, they are much larger and follow the Sharpe edge design of the car. The grille was a narrowed but deeper trapezoid whose running-horse was again corralled in chrome on base and GT models. Wider wraparound headlamp clusters. Body sides were pulled out, wheel openings newly flared. The rear end was modernized with larger, squared-up vertical taillamps. Side rails were fully boxed, with insulating foam in the rocker-panel areas. Better floorpan sealing also helped lessen road noise. Convertibles gained underbody "rail extenders" designed to reduce structural shudder. Rear track on all models was widened by 1.4 inches (thus equaling the front dimension), and a 1.5-inch higher transmission tunnel allowed a little more upward wheel travel. The seat tracks were also given 1 inch more travel.

Overall in my opinion, this design has the most aggressive style of all Mustangs.

Slightly longer and wider, the 1999 Mustang received upgrades and modifications. The 4.6 was upgraded with a new Camshaft, Heads, and intake manifold. This was the release of the PI (Performance Improved) top end system. Bigger valves, reshaped combustion chambers, a new higher-lift longer-duration camshaft, straighter manifold runners for better airflow, and improved crankshaft, conrod, and thrust bearings. Now the power rating for the 4.6 has made it up to 260 hp and 302 torque. The fuel system is now a returnless type fuel system utilizing a PCM-guided fuel rail pressure sensor to regulate pressure. Ignition system changed from a EDIS "waste spark" to an EDIS "Coil on Plug" (COP) design.

A "COP" design is a coil pak for each spark plug. No more No more plug wires to deal with.Using individual coils for each spark plug also means the coils have more time between each firing. Increasing the "coil saturation" time (the time the voltage to the coil is on to build up its magnetic field) increases the coil output voltage at high rpm when misfire is most apt to occur under load.

Smaller-diameter antiroll bars and retuned shock absorbers were specified to improve ride compliance with no harm to handling despite adoption of firmer springs. GTs switched from variable- to linear-rate coils for the same reasons. Steering was revised with less boost, better on-center feel, and a useful three-foot tighter turning circle. The front disc brakes gained aluminum twin-piston calipers saving 10 pounds apiece in unneeded unsprung weight & a larger master cylinder. Optional Traction control is now made available for the Mustang GT as well.

Along with the wider rear housing a 3.27 rear gear is now standard on all model mustangs.
