As it says, do you think that the 1996-1998 Cobra's should have come with 6 speeds instead of 5.

Not necessarily a 6 speed but a stronger tranny yes. But a T56 with the .50 6th gear would have been great. We all wouldn't be replacing/rebuilding trannies if they would have come with a T56.

I say no. I think the T-56 is a waste. The T-45 is an awesome tranny if built correctly. They should have put the build-quality and strength of the T-56 into the T-45. T-45's shift awesome at higher RPM's, have a very smooth throw comparably, and don't have as much rotating wieght. Also, they have a 3.27 first gear compared to whatever the T-56's have (I think 2.73 or something). I am just going to have ProMotion build my T45.

A six speed only if there was more power available then 305HP. My old '96 snake could barely push 5th w/3:27 gears.

My T56 shifts much better at higher rpms than any T45 I've ever shifted. My T56 is also much smoother shifting than my old T45 (this could be due to shifters more than trannies though). Also, the T56 is not as heavy as everyone thinks.

Until you have a T56 you don't realize how much better they are. The T45 is a poorly designed tranny with very weak internals. There's a reason the T56 comes in every other American sports car (00 R, 03-4 Cobra, F-bodies since 93, Corvettes and Vipers).

The T56 is fine for a stock 96-98 Cobra. 3.27 gears and 5th gear aren't for accelerating, they are for cruising. Thats the reason trannies have numerous gears.

I vote yes, but will add that I wish they started in oh, say...94 or 95 :-D

The 94-95 Cobras were a little too underpowered for 6 gears.

Now I 100% firmly believe that the 05 GT's should have came with t-56s although im not a huge fan of the 05 since its a "new edge" car. Especially since GM has been using the 6 speeds for about a decade or more.

94-95's aren't too underpowered for a T56. The T56 is only about 20 pounds heavier than a T45, very small difference.

The 05 is not a "new edge" car. 99-04 models are referred to as "new edge".

I have driven MANY 03 Cobras, Vettes, and F-bodies with T-56's. Mine shifts better than most of them, with exceptions, and many of the ones I've felt (particularly 03's and F-bodies) felt like a stick in a box of rocks. Granted, the shitty ones mostly had stock shifters (one was a Tri-Ax though). Also, the T45 is NOT weak. It's the synchros and forks that suck, and those can be replaced with steel forks/CF syncros for cheaper than buying a T56. BTW, the F-body T56 is complete shit (breaks almost as easy a T45), and Vipers, Corvettes, 03/04's, and 00R's need that 6th gear in road racing, which all of them were built to dominate. I'm just saying, for a racing tranny, they make no sense. A TKO would be a better choice, or in my opinion a built T45 that is geared a LOT better for our cars.

ehh not to nit pick but the mid-90's f-bod's didn't have a Tremec T56. true, they were 6-speeds but i think they were some borg-warner piece.

what's the weight gain associated with swapping our T45's for T56's? anyone have a number?

How much would it cost to build a t45 for a sc car?

It'de cost about $1200 for an 800hp capable setup. Maybe less. Keep in mind, that includes a badass 26-spline billet input-shaft.

ahh wikipedia owns me again:

The T-56 six speed manual transmission has been used in a wide range of vehicles from General Motors, Dodge, and Ford Motor Company. The transmission was originally designed and built by Borg-Warner, but as of 1998, is built by Tremec. The applications include:

* General Motors F-body V8 cars, 1993-2002
* Chevrolet Corvette, 1992-2006
* Chevrolet SSR, 2005-2006
* Pontiac GTO, 2004-2006
* Holden Monaro, 2001-2006
* Cadillac CTS V-Series, 2004-2006
* Dodge Viper, 1992-2006
* Dodge SRT10 Ram, 2004-2006
* Ford Mustang Cobra R, 2000
* Ford Mustang Cobra, 2003-2004
* Aston Martin Vanquish, 2001-2006

The transmission uses a hydraulic clutch and had an 11 inch clutch disk. The entire case, including the bellhousing, is made of aluminum. The T-56 has a synchromesh made up of brass synchros for the GM and Ford applications, and stainless steel in the Dodge application.
