This makes you wonder about buying exhausts from manufacturers that have "free" shipping.
When you move thousands of boxes a day the shipping companies cut amazing deals.

...and there is no such thing as free. Someone, somewhere is paying the price. In regard to free shipping on parts; the cost is rolled into the price of the item before the distributor lists it for sale. No business loses money on purpose (unless you're me. I keep giving projects away to try and help some of the up and coming musicians I feel strongly about).

Definitely. If you were to go to my company's own sales website, they offer "free shipping" but the same item being sold through one of our vendor's brick and mortar stores is considerably cheaper. The customer is usually paying shipping whether it is advertised or not.

My exhaust was purchased from a small little store and the exhaust was cheaper than anywhere else with "free" shipping. Once I paid it was drop shipped directly from Borla but I can't imagine the store I used sells many of these exhausts which in turn would lead me to believe it would not see a discount of some sort from the manufacturer. The parentheses around free make me wonder what these places would price them if one didn't need shipping.

I laugh when people say $200 for shipping is "expensive". People have no idea what goes on in the freight world.

I used to work in the performance aftermarket industry. I shipped a lot of parts. I shipped more hoods, bumpers, roll pans, exhausts, and other large items than I can remember. I even had parts drop shipped.

$200 for shipping is insane. It would only make sense if I was the only customer with a product delivered in my area. Shipping companies, like insurance companies, make a profit through a socialist style approach. Everyone puts in some, and at the end of the day the consumer saves while the distributor and shipper both gain a profit.

There really is not much to understand.

If you want to donate $200 to my shipping cause, I will gladly get the seller's PayPal address to you. I won't complain one bit. I will thank you, and look forward to meeting you at some point.

It has nothing to do with knowledge of the freight world. $200 to ship an exhaust is stupid, end of story.

no, it's not.

an exhaust system is HUGE. They charge you by the dimensional weight. The price also makes sense if you are living in the middle of no where. People just get butt hurt when they can't get free shipping.

Yes, it is. I know exactly how they charge you. I work for a heavy equipment manufacturer that air ships parts all over the world.

I don't think anyone is expecting free shipping for an exhaust. But charging 15 - 30% of the exhaust itself to ship it is ludicrous.

Are there extenuating circumstances that might lead to that? Probably. But it damn sure shouldn't cost that much on the regular.

Who said anything about free shipping? Who here is whining? I asked for advice.

I have gotten some amazing responses, and hopefully they lead my friend and seller in a positive direction when he gets a few quotes tomorrow.

I'm not the baller who thinks $200 isn't expensive for shipping. I think it is unless that box is loaded with lead bars then I'll change my opinion.

You're paying for space inside the truck, not only weight.

Shipping wise...size or weight play a factor. A shoe box with lead bars won't ship for the same price as a pair of shoes because weight takes over.

I shipped a very large leather duffel bag, pretty much a hockey bag if you will, but one that wouldn't really smash/compact. The best way to ship it from speaking with others was that Fedex sells a "golf bag box." I think it was like $25 for the box and packaging, and then like $78 to ship, so just over $100 for a sub 10lb box. it sucks, but it's the size that got me.

I think the oversized shape does you in more than weight all other things being equal.

I have been doing my homework. I believe the issue was with the UPS store.

We will see as the seller investigates further tomorrow. Hopefully I will have an exhaust on the way.

If not, I am screwed, and will accept that I can't get the exhaust. It is not worth $250 to ship an exhaust. At least not to me.
