i have on the way an svt white knob/ chrome stick for my gt500. what is the procedure for removing the shift boot to get to the two bolts holding the shifter stick on?

It just pops out, lift on 2 corners and then seperate the boot from the stock ball.
The elastic boot collar fits into a groove in the base of the knob. You can just pull the collar of the boot down to release it from the knob. Then you can unscrew the knob CCW and remove without interference from the boot. You can then pry the bezel up with a plastic prybar or better yet just lift the bezel up with your finger tips - should be easy.
I have heard of some folks applying medium-strength thread locker to the two handle bolts to keep them secure when replacing the handle. I used a split lock washer and washer on the bolt heads instead.
