After much researching on the style of wheel I wanted to go with to replace the PP wheel, I decided to go Shelby C3 wheels. I like the look, decent price and roll formed/powder coated so a good compromise for the super expensive forgings.
I purchased them from Summit and because I live in Canada had them shipped to a mail box in the US and picked them up. I went 20" all around so I needed new front Pilot super sports. I planned to re-use the rears. So now I would have 275/35 up front and 285/35 rear. My first disappointment was that they were made in China (what isnt anymore). Because of this I had the tire tech spin each wheel to see if they were OK. One bare wheel needed 4 oz of weights. The tire guy said not idea but it should be ok. So I get everything mounted and get them on the car. They look great!
Second thing I notices is how easy the finish comes off. I noticed after taking the center caps on and off a couple of times the paint (or powder coat) has worn off in a couple of spots. I've had stuff powder coated locally and short of a chisel, I could not chip the stuff so its either a bad job or its not powder coated.
The big disappointment was two days later when I took the car on the high way and it started vibrating at 70mph. At first I thought it was the old back tires. I had to go to another tire shop since it was saturday and the one I used was closed. They rebalanced and again vibration. One wheel took 9oz to "balance"
Come Tuesday I located a shop with a road force machine. They spun up the rears and found one rim had excessive run out so it was no good. On the phone to Summit Racing who in turn call the Shelby Wheel Company. They agree to replace the wheel. the figure it was damaged in shipping (I couldnt see any damage). So now I have to buy the wheel, go back to the US mail box, ship the bad wheel and pick up the good one. I found a local tire guy and had him spin the wheel to make sure its good. It was a 1/2 oz out.
I get home, mount the tire and take it out on the hiway. Still vibrating. I put the old front rims and tires on, and the vibration is almost gone. Next morning I take the fronts to a BMW specialty shop. Checks one wheel on his high dollar german balancer and it shows 1.2mm run out. He says its acceptable. The other wheel is fine. Put them on the car and although not 100% the same as the stock wheels, its by far much better. rear is still out.
So now I buy two new replacement rear tires and take them to the same shop. One wheel needed about 1.5oz the other 2.5. He says put that wheel on the right side. So today I take it out on the highway, took it up to 140km/h and its OK but its not to the same standard as the OEM wheels. I suspect the wheel with the 1.2mm runout issue and the rear wheel that needed the extra weight is culprit.
So if you thinking of buying these wheel, make sure you check them over...carefully!
