You can do it, you just need spacers to push them out. Just a for-example: Ford factory "Bullitt" style 17x8 rims, the S197 rim has a 45mm offset and a 6.3" backspace. The original Bullitt 17x8 rims for the edge cars has 30mm offset and a 5.75" backspace. That's over a half inch in backspace and a huge difference in offset. The "sucked-in" look would be bad on a 99-04 car.
I didn't take pictures, but when I took my 2007 17" factory rims off, I put them on my 1996 GT and they looked retarded. They need a deeper dish wheel. The s197 rims are almost flat-faced.
