The hill assist kinda sneaks up on me too some times. Stalled the car the other day because of it.

I'd like to know the conditions for hill assist to engage or disengage

AdvanceTrac has to be on. It worked for me all the time on the slightest incline from a complete stop.

It's funny, my driveway is on an incline and it works every time I go to pull in the garage. There is a process to turn it off. Some crap like turn on the car and push the brake then turn the wheel to full lock left then full lock right, blah blah blah. I can't remember. Ahahha. Either way it does seem to make it harder but I guess I can get use to it.

Technically it is called Hill Assist. It holds the brake momentarily when starting out on an incline. Ford does offer Roll Stability Control, I have it on my 06 explorer.
