Did anyone see the tech questions section of this months issue? There was a letter from the owner of a 01 Cobra owner, a "pinger". He was asking for help understanding Ford's respones. Their respnse was pretty interesting.

Fords response to the guys compaints. R & T, said that, while Ford said it is normal, it is definitely not. They said that if he had modded his car, tho return to factory specs and try again, or to try to drain his tank and add some octane booster. Their response is pretty long. Check their site when the issue hits the newsstands, it should be in the tech section.

to add to that

The car owner had stated that the car was normal for the first 4 months he had it, and then it started pinging. R&T's suggestion was something obviously had to change, and suggested that modding could be the culprit. Apparently, slight changes can cause big, unexpected results when it came to the electronics reading it. They mentioned freer-flowing, aftermarket (especially cone-shaped) air filters and replaced MAF's as a place to start. It was suggested putting everything back to stock and see if the pinging stopped. That would be an indication that a mod was at fault. They did suggest trying octane booster to see if it made a difference in States where premium is 91 octane. If all that failed, then they suggested starting to look at the injectors and the fuel system.

Nothing definitely that they would pinpoint, just trial and error.
