Is it possible to replace the rear main seal with the engine in the car?

Does the back cover plate have to come off?

My race car sprung an oil leak over the weekend and I suspect it's the rear main leaking. Trans has to come out anyways cause it doesn't like to shift anymore. Still does shift just doesn't want to. Time to see if the qt bell and the t45 source cover plate makes dropping the t45 any easier!

Are you talking about the block plate that goes between the flywheel and block or the plate that the seal is in? If you're talking about the plate the seal is in, I removed mine last time I replaced the seal just because it was easier to put the seal on while working on a bench.

Yeah talking about the seal in the plate around the crank.

At least I figure that's what's pissing oil out all over underneath the engine back right in front of the bell housing.

Either way trans has to come out. Or it could be a leaky oil pan.

Well I got under the car tonight and it wasn't the rear main leaking. The sandwich adapter for the accusump has a slow leak, couldn't see it at the track and just saw oil dripping off the back of the pan and figured rear main seal. Trans has still gotta come out for some r&r.
