So I bought this car a while back and when I did, the driver side exhaust pipe was too far in towards the bumper and slightly c0cked to the right (looking at the bumper). It looked to have some carbon build-up on it but nothing a light rubbing compound couldn't take care of. Well, that was probably true before I drove 14+ hours straight taking it from Tennessee to Florida (home). I've put a few (8) applications of light rubbing compound on there and got most of it off but now it appears to be stained from the heat and carbon. I finally fixed the pipe so it's not getting any worse but I want to clean the rest of that stuff off if possible. My fear is that the paint is actually burnt and would require a touch-up to fix.

Do you know of anything I can try that isn't drastic. I'm afraid of wet sanding because I've never done it and don't know if the bumper is a different beast due to the additive to keep the paint flexible.

Thoughts?
