rear shock removal 99 contour svt

just a question may have been answered already but do you need to compress the coil springs on the back shocks when removing them and if so what is the easiest way I have a set of spring compressors but there isn't enough room up there to tighten them down any help would be appreciated thanks

The rear suspension is a strut design. Remove the strut as an assembly and then compress the spring enough to safely loosen the nut that holds the spring and coil mount in place.
