.... Bigger chunks of ice are going to last longer than typical bagged ice. The real challenge is going to be how to store the ice before you need it. I don't think it will last that long once it's in the tank and the pump is cycling coolant.
....Willie, one question I've got is how do you prevent smaller chunks of ice from blocking the flow out of the tank or worse yet getting in the pump?

Yes it is. I attribute this result to the difference in the fluid temp, maybe??? I'm not versed in fluid dynamics (worst subject in college) but there must be something to be said about 130 degree temps vs. 60 degree.... and its ability to absorb heat from air..... you think?
