I just replaced all the bearing and races in my rear end and this is the pattern I am getting.
DRIVE SIDE:

COAST SIDE:

I have been looking at all of the pattern charts and I am unsure if this is acceptable. If the pinion depth is too shallow, I have heard 0.30 is standard, so how small of a shim can I use? The backlash is at 0.12 and I used the same sized pinion shim (an 0.28). It is an Eaton posi with 4.30 gears (unsure of brand)
Thanks,
Dave

The pattern on the coast side especially looks right at the edge of the teeth. I'd keep messin with it. As far as I know, you can use as thin of shim as you need. Are these gears brand new? If so, I like to go a bit tighter with backlash with new gears. The spec is .08-.12 so you're at the end of the spectrum.

take about .08 " out and try it again leave backlash at .12". Do you have mock bearimgs? If not grind your inner pinion bearing out so it just falls on and play around.

Yeah, I think I will play with it some more. The gears/differential are 4-5 years old.
I did grind out the center of old pinion bearing, so I don't have to keep pressing it on and off.
I think maybe the pinion shim size may be why the toe side of the gear has a bit of wear on the edges, because the PO put a shim too thick for the application.
I believe I have a 0.20 or 0.22 in the pack I will try.
Thanks guys!!!
Dave
