If you live in a state where they are legal, nothing will happen. If you live in Virginia, you are S.O.L.

They are legal in Oklahomo. They are illegal in Virginia, Washington DC. and on military bases.

Radar detectors are illegal in all commercial vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds regardless of state.

chances are probably a lot less that the officer would let you off with a warning if they see the radar detector

True, probly why I didn't get off with a warning last New Year's Eve. LEO had apparently just pulled out behind me from a side road and I didn't see him. When the slow car in front of me turned off, I accelerated and when I got up to too fast, he pulled me over. Radar detector never even went off cuz he probly didn't have to use it on me. :bash: It was my first offense and he was a really nice guy and reduced the speed on the ticket, but I probly was screwed cuz I had the RD chillin on the dash.

On a side note, why are they illegal on military bases? I work on one and always turn it off and stuff but just wondering. Guess it interferes with whatever radar they might have on station. And the fact that there really isnt any reason to speed on a base.

If they find a radar detector on you in VA the cops normally will asks for the RD he will take it write down the serial number, model, type and give it back to you.
That happen to me twice. Once going into the a navy base, and the second time while cruising the beach. no ticket but a warning telling me they are illegal and next time they cath me with it they will give me a ticket

Radar Detectors are illegal to USE on a military installation, they are not illegal to be in your vehicle. I am a Sgt in the Marine Corps, and as long as it is off, you are fine. Every now and then, PMO may ask you to unplug it when you go through the gate, but that is not a requirement. As for the reasons why, for the same reasons it is illegal in VA, or D.C. Because it is. The radar does not cause any interference with any military interments, if something like that caused a interference problem, then we would be in a world of hurt.
