I just spoke to Chris at Tires Direct about replacing my bald stock F1 tires. They lasted 22.000 miles. I still have the stock rims. I told him that I want to run the 315/35/17 555r's in the rear and the normal 555 275/40/17 for the front, and he said that it is not a good idea, because the tire is designed for a 10.5 - 12.5 inch rim, and if I used it on the stock rim it could present some safety problems and since the rim is not wide enough, it would not provide any added contact patch with the road. He recommended goind with the 275's in the rear. I told him that I have headr of plenty of people running the 315/35/17 555r's on the stock rims, with no problems whatsoever. Has anyone ever had any problems with these tires on the STOCk rim? what do you guys think?

while the Nittos run smaller then other brands I would agree with him.. Bad idea.. and more then anything you will gain no benifit with the larger size on that wheel.

I am planning on running the Nitto 555 street tires 275/40/17 up front. I need to hear more about people who are running the 555R 315/37/17 in the back.

I'm running 315's nitto dr's out back on stock rims and they are fine. No problems at all and much much better than the f1's.

The 315 DRs fit fine on the stock rim and look NICE. I put a 285 Nitto 555 Extreme tire right next to the 315 drag radials and they are almost identical, the 315 DRs were about a 1/2" wider. I have been running on 315 DRs for quite some time with no problems or cornering issues - both street and track.

315 Nitto DR here on the stock 10th Anniv. rims. No problems at all, even in hard cornering/braking/rain driving/drag strip. They work great, I love them.

Everyone I've seen and talk to love 315's on the back. I plan on getting them when my bfg drag radials wear out. The bfg's are great but they wear out so fast.

I am surprised that they told you that. I also ordered mine from them a while back and he said that was the tire I wanted to go with, no problems what so ever. There are tons of us running the 315's out back with no problems at all.
By the way, I put 7500miles on mine and I need a new set. I will go with something else next time. :(

I've had my Nitto 555DR 315-35's for a couple of months. Picked up a few tenths in my 60' time and no problem at all with daily driving. They're supposed to last between 10 - 12k normal miles. I'd get them again when these wear out. Discount tire stocks and installs them with no problem.

If Chris at Tire Direct is saying that since the stock 9 inch rim is too narrow, that the 315 will not offer anymore contact with the road versus the 275. DO people ge the 315 because they like the wider look, or will they actually perform better on the stock rim versus the 275?

Well I run the exact setup youre talking about with no problems. Im actually on my second set of rears. They fit the wheel nice IMO. They are a good bit more narrow than the BFG. The BFG's bulge out alot. My buddy has them. They still look good though. As far as contact patch goes I cant say. Even if they(275 vs 315) do have about the same contact I would go with the 315. They look bad ass. You wont be dissapointed. I have a hard time believing if you lower them to track pressure(14-16 lbs) they dont have more contact than the 275. Id ask him does he have the 315 in stock. Could be very telling.

Here's a couple of pics of my Nitto 315/35/17 DRs on stock rims:

No problems at all, and they certainly grab better than the stockers. Be mindful of hard rain. The tires do ok, but they will hydroplane easier than most regular radials. I've gotten 20K miles out of Nittos - but only with regular driving, no burnouts.

Good luck.

THey fit without any spacers and do clear the IRS bolts, right? No safety issue with the tire coming out of the rim or blow out with the 315's?
