For a run of the mill head during an engine rebuild, is it necessary to remember which port each valve comes out of - like connecting rod caps to the rods? Or can you mix and match? It would be a bit of a time saver to be able to toss all the valves in a bucket and clean them instead of doing one at a time.

Yes, that valve has worn into the valve seat and each one should be kept to its original location.

Edit: are you also rebuilding the head. Meaning, new guides and seats? If so, then the valves can go back in a different location. This also assumes you are having the valves check and lapped by the machinist.

Thanks for the response.

Not rebuilding the head - just a dis-assemble and clean - its getting new seals but no machining.
