Hey all I had a question for you all.

Any of you who are doctors or experienced weight lifters I appreciate any input.
I used to get these massive headaches whenever I would weight lift, to the point where it would stop my workouts and a couple times I have had to drop down to my knees from pain. Anyways I took a break from lifting heavy and recently have been consistantly going to gym again like I used to. Everything was fine and dandy until earlier this week. I started getting headaches again... At first they were very minor, but as days went on it got worse and worse. I have tried taking advil before workouts and have had no success.

Anyways today im sitting there with my buddy/trainer and I jumped on the bench and all was good and than halfway through my set *BAM* felt like my head was going to explode, I couldnt take it, we had to stop. I know its not breathing or dehydration, I always drink plenty of water and keep an eye on my breathing. Its all along the back part of my head that hurts

Now I have done some research and a lot of the time where I have found people with the same problem , it seems that it is a pinched nerve in my neck that is causing the headaches, and that a trip to the chiropractor fixed the problem for the others. I would think this is the case because even thought its mostly when I lift, sometimes Ill wake up with the same headache and it wont go away for hours. My guess is from sleeping wrong. I have quite a few knots in my neck from when I first started lifting 3+ years ago and didnt exactly know what I was doing could this be the problem?

Today I told my buddy to feel the back of my head and even he felt my head pulsing and told me to go home and rest. IM starting to get my old body back and have made some great gains, I would hate to lose it all again....

Im pretty sure thats the problem but I want to get your input. IM calling the Chiropractor first thing in morning tomorrow

Regardless of what the haters say, chiropractors are great. I hurt myself pretty badly and could barely walk. Went in and after the session I was so much better. A week later and I felt awesome. I go about 3 times a year now just to keep everything working well.

I had the opposite experience with a chiropractor. Long story short; I had severe kink in my neck, went to the get a adjustment and not too long after that I needed to have surgery to fuse two discs C5 and C6 in my neck. I'm not saying that he was the cause or I wouldn't have needed the surgery anyway but I would never go back to a chiropractor, nor would suggest one, but to each his own. It sounds to me that you are getting more of a migraine headache that could be brought on by the elevated pressure when lifting. When was the last time that you had your blood pressure checked?

Quit lifting heavy and go medium weight high rep till you figure this out. Essentially putting less strain on the rest of your body during the workout not just targeted muscles. Focus on form and time of extension and contraction.

I've been training competitive bench pressers for a few years and I haven't seen this one before. The only headache thing I've seen personally is due to improper breathing. You should definitely consult your doctor and hold off on the training that causes your pain. Try verifying your form is correct as well. I can see how bad form would place undue stress on the neck area.

Bailey the only problem with that is the first time this happened to me i tried going medium or light and it still gave me a bad headache, not quite as massive as when i go heavy but it still does it. Im sure my form is heavy and even when I lift with the trainers at the gym they say my form is good so IDK what the problem is

What type of trainer? If you're doing a powerlifting style workout, don't listen to regular personal trainers when they talk about form. Most of them don't have experience with real strength training.

I would stop working out and get things checked out. Last thing you want to do is drop dead because of something that could have been prevented.

Now now cobra I already said I was going to see a doc, no harm in asking people on here, I dont know what profession they are, or if anyone else has had the experience. Asking never hurt anyone.

Hb712, that was actually my initial thought, but even when I made sure I was breathing correctly, used lighter weights and made sure form was ok it got bad. But the trainers im talking about are the personal trainers that are hired by the gym, they are all certified and a lot do competitions and stuff like that for body building.

@jess I actually have read about people with that same problem, scared the piss out of me when i read that

@dnice, nope no other pains bro, all the back half of my head and part of my neck.

Im gonna have to lay off for a bit like you guys are saying, maybe Ill just do cardio until im able to see the doc. Luckily I got medical time for a full check up from head to toe. Thanks again fro all the input guys, much appreciated:beer: keep it coming

I was having the same issues, they call it subluxation. my wife works for a chiropractor and ever since I started to get adjusted it has gone away. I got to the point where my fingers would tingle and a massive migraine would hit me. It sucks. Talk to a chiropractor or I can have my wife talk to her boss for you.

This.

Dude a severe headache that comes on suddenly is nothing to fool around with, (even if others have had similar symptoms which were cured by a simple adjustment).

Don't do another rep until you see your primary and a neurologist.

Just curious...but do you take any pre-workout supplements (ie: NO-explode, C4, jack3d, etc...)

if so, have you tried working out without them, to see if the headaches are still there?

+1

i normally give medical advice on this forum, but my advice here is to see YOUR family doctor and get referred to a specialist from there. no chiropracter until you see a real doctor. chiropracters prey on the fact that back/neck pain resolves over 95% of the time within 1-3 days if you do absolutely nothing more than take it easy. then, they claim their adjustment is what really helped you. just watch out for the ones that reach into your back pocket and pick your pocket while they're manipulating you
