I had my Mickey Thompson ET streets just mounted on my 18x10.5 inch rims and the tire does not sit on the edge of the rim. My buddies toyos sit fine on his 18x10.5 inch wheels. Both rims are AFS cobra replicas. There is an 1/8 of an inch distance between my tire and rim.

I went back to the place today asked them why the tire is like it is on the rim because i didn't think about it when i had them mounted at the time.

They said the design of the M/T drag radials are designed differently compared to a street tire. The tire is perfectly fine and the car drove fine today, i am just not use to seeing a tire look like this on a rim.

w/o pics, hard to say
but
not all tires are actual size... some are over & some are under

also some tires have a wheel lip protector to reduce chance of road rash
