Hey guys I'm trying to get a newer realistic idea of MPG people are achieving with 7.3 powerstrokes 99-03. There seems to be incredible discrepancies on forums that owners go solely off the lie-gauge(overhead console) for fuel economy. I'm trying to get a figure to see if a edge tuner is truly worth it.

My overhead reads 10 city/ 14.5 highway(alternating elevations) @ 55-60mph, 1500rpm. I actually calculate it to be around 12-13 highway, 10-11 city. Truck is a stock crew cab 7.3 4x4 auto 6ft bed unloaded full tank.

I averaged 13.5 when I had mine. It was a 2000 ccsb auto, 3.73, with exhaust, diy filter, 4-6 oz of tcw-3 with every fillup and usually on the 100hp tune. Best I ever got was 17.8 all highway and worst was 8.8 towing a jeep.Everything was hand calculated and tire diameter factored in since the speedo was off.

Our overhead mpg guage is actually pretty accurate. 4x4, auto, crew cab, long bed. No lift, tires similar size to stock. Maybe slightly larger. has some kind of intake mod and an aftermarket muffler that were supposed to be good for mpg. We get 17-18 mpg highway at 65 mph, unloaded.

not sure of the gear ratio in the truck, but its a 2001, non CA truck, so its missing some emissions equipment from the factory.

I've seen my factory gauge off by as much as 0.4 MPG but usually it's almost spot on. I'm still very curious about this since I have no clue where these guys on the other forums are getting 18-26mpg without changing gears and just a tune when you consider most having lifts, tunes and performance mods.

I was hoping on a 5mpg gain by a canned tune but it seems more and more like its a pipe dream when I look at actual data. So far your numbers reflect a more realistic view

Have seen 20mpg, 03 7.3, hypermax tune, 285's, I was surprised. This is hand calculated.

I've gotten 22.6 mpgs before on a long freeway drive with minimal stops.
1999 2wd 3.73 gear...with 4" turbo back and cold air, ts tuber on the 100hp mpg tune.
Usually I get 14's local. I don't check it much, but it's better mpg than my lightning gets which is sad yet impressive.

Anything that advances timing will get you better fuel mileage. The problem most people have (myself included) is that loading the hotter tune makes it harder to keep your foot out of it, which more than negates any mileage benefits the tune would have given.

I used to drive 60%-70% highway.

2000 Extended cab 4x4 3.73 - 17.6mpg
2003 CC 4x4 3.73 - 16.7mpg

I hand calc'd almost every tank. Heavily loaded highway mileage on the 2000 was 10mpg at 75mph and 12mpg at 65mph. Never loaded up the 2003, that's why I sold it.

The 2000 had a Tony Wildman custom tune and the 2003 had a custom tune from a good buddy of mine who did it for fun.

14 mpg here. Longer trips can will bump it up a little over 15. Always toting around at least 1000lb in the bed. 220k on stock tune

After a few days of watching it closely by hand I'm at around 11/12 city and 14/15 highway (lots of mountains).

I combined 16 in my 96 2WD 6ft bed 5 speed. Intake and Edge tune were only mods.

when I drove from southern California to San Antonio TX with a 00 cclb 8 inch lift with Humvee tires, 3.73, 4 inch exhaust, edge tow tune and an intake which I don't remember it had it now has the AFE big boost. I was hauling a metal trailer with a mach 1 on it, the bed was loaded with tools, snapon master series with hutch, jack, jack stands, wheels, tires. it wasn't a light load. from California to the Arizona/new mexico boarder I was getting 13 mpg at mostly 60-65mph going against strong winds. from the Arizona/new mexico boarder to roswell (an un expected detour) I got the worst due to climbing up to 3200 ft and wind 8 mpg. from roswell to TX I got the best at 16 mpg.
now with mickey Thompson mud terrain's im lucky to see 13 hwy empty.

Just curious if you recalibrated your speedo after the tire change. I didn't after my big jump in size, we took the real mileage distance from another car and found over 1 mpg difference.
