Pontiac G8 To Live On As Chevy Caprice

Report: Pontiac G8 to live on as Chevrolet Caprice

Importing the Australian-market Holden Commodore to America as the Pontiac G8 was arguably one of the smarter moves GM’s management made with regard to the Pontiac brand. But with the demise of the division at hand, Americans are once again without a large rear-wheel-drive sedan from The General. Or maybe not. If Vice Chairman Bob Lutz has his way, the G8 will become the new Chevrolet Caprice.

GM previously stated it would not rebadge the G8 as a Chevy, but rumors about its revival surfaced just over a month ago. A renewed role for Lutz at the company means he will likely push for the car to saved. “Lutz will take over,” GM Chief Financial Officer Ray Young told BusinessWeek. “If he concludes that there is a role [for the G8] to play, we’ll listen.”

But don’t take Young’s word for it. Mr. Lutz himself confirms the G8 will live on. “We decided that we would continue to import it as a Chevrolet,” Lutz told Automobile. “It is kind of too good to waste.”

It’s unclear how quickly the new Caprice might come to market. Essentially, the G8 would only require new badges and a different grille. Of course, even designing a new grille takes time. It could be months before the new Caprice goes shows up in showrooms.

As for its overall appearance, we suspect it will look similar to the Lumina sold in Middle East markets (pictured). However, GM cannot use the exact same fascia because it is not designed to conform to U.S. safety regulations.

If it makes more work for American workers then I am for it.
That is why my last two cars were Toyota and BMW.

I just watched in on the live chat with Lutz from 2-3, and he seemed pretty excited about the G8 continuing on. He mentioned it would also be sold to police units around the country.

Seems to me the better name would be Impala...as it better associated size wise than the that huge caprice. Besides Impala is already a rear drive platform overseas.

Either way, I am glad to see it survive..I'll take mine SS version please....

G8 is a victim like the '88 Fiero GT was.
I see a couple of folks on this board think the G8 is the Bee's knees.
Hey guy(s), who is going to buy a car that no longer exists? Where will you get parts especially since GM sold only enough to count on one hand?
Unless you're going t park it with few miles waiting for it to be worth something in your mind.
Pontiac finally gets it right only get axed by dumbshits @ GM.
Even though the G8 has its roots from the Aussie version...
Best thing GM had going besides the 2010 Camaro.
The new Camaro is the #1 seller GM has to offer.
Pretty fooking sad considering how small the % of buyers are thinking speed demon as their next GM purchase.
Doh!

This is good news. I think they should use it to replace the current Impala. I know quite a few people that would buy it if it had an Impala SS version just due to the name

Fleet rentals yes. Not consumer sales. No body in their right mind would buy such junk,
Both of those cars are ugly as an unwiped ass.
Jeff

Whatever.

Do you have any volume breakdowns to back that up? Sounds like more uneducated blather with no facts. The Malibu is a great car (just as good as the Fusion).

I guess Ford doesn't sell the Fusion or Taurus as fleet cars either.

im glad its living on. i do like the car.

but i fail to see how the plastic that covers the steel bumper is not road safety legal in this country. thats why they are called bumper covers. not the actual bumper

Well, I'm going to have to let you win this one. Google is the one center of truth.

You know the saying, "Never argue with an idiot.
They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience."

To top it off, you're from the peoples republic of Kalifornia.

You win, you win:bash:

This is all I need to know about you kalifornians: You guys are $25 billion in debt, handing out IOUs, millions of illegals running around, super duper liberal, and everyone drives a Prius. What makes you think I would ever want to step foot in your state?

You are quoting one month worth of sales on a car that was just launched and you are still wrong. Brilliant!!!!

June 2009 Sales

Camaro = 9,320
Impala = 14,931
Malibu = 11,466

Total 2009 Sales

Camaro = 15,397
Impala = 78,687
Malibu = 75,829
