I have a question, My dad and I were coming to work today and past a officer sitting on the side of the road working on his laptop. My dad was wondering what internet or service like that do you all have when there isn't any service on your phone. How do you run license check or just browse the internet? Thanks.

The officer may have been doing his/her work offline... Either that or he/she was logged into the GS9A-12 Satellite.

Ours work off of cell service, BUT when cell service is not available, ours will automatically switch and work through a separate channel on our digital radio system. It will be much slower and not have internet, but we still have access to run criminal information on the roadside.

Depends on the Agency, but most are connected to the internet so officers can pull Law Enforcement (NCIC and local databases), DMV, Vehicle Checks on Vehicles they pull over. They also have all the forms for the HOURS of paperwork they must submit for any tickets and/or investigations they are conducting. Depends on the Agency... State, Federal, Local, County.... so many agencies its mind boggling.

Things have gotten so much more complicated these days; I only used mine for porn........

U laugh, but there are MANY Agents/Cops who have been jailed for Child Porn being found on their computers. How dumb can people be? :poke:

Rarely did we ever have bad Internet service. Most work (ecrash, ecitation, etc) can be completed then uploaded when service is established again. Other than that, use the radio. If the radio isn't working, use your cell, if you cell is out too, oh well. Try having this talk with some retired veterans. They will laugh you out if the house in their lay-z-boys.

When i first started, our city water tower had a beacon light. When it was blinking, you drove to the nearest call box, used your key to open it and the phone rang through to our dispatcher. Radios followed a couple of years later, portables were a luxury that only connected to our trunk-mounted radio so you couldn't get too far from your car. By the time I retired, digital systems, cells, MBD's, etc. were in every car.

But, we also had flat saps..........

I started my LEO career in 1987. In 1987, we...

  • 1. Hand wrote our reports, once approved, typed them using a typewriter
  • 2. used brick style radios
  • 3. NCIC was a luxury
  • 4. carried .357 revolvers (I still love that gun)
  • 5. Didn't have GPS
  • 6. Didn't have onboard computers
  • 7. No Tasers
  • 8. Walked backwards in the snow
