He used a different source photo. Notice the brakes visible between the spokes. Those aren't in either of the original photos posted above.

It should be pretty easy to do, though. Just add an alpha channel to the layer for transparency and use the eraser to clean out between the spokes. You can remove the logo with the clone tool.
