Not Your Usual Tint Question

I've seen quite a few tint threads, and mine doesn't really fit into any of them, so I'm hoping someone has an answer on this. My situation is that I'm soon to buy a newer GTP, put a couple little mods on it, and some tint. Because of insurance reasons and my age, this car will be registered in my dad's name. He has post viral syndrome, and he is often sensitive to light, so in return he has a legit doctors note saying that he can have his tint as dark as he needs it. Granted I will be driving the car 99% of the time, even though I'll probably be listed as a secondary or occasional driver. Will I be able to get in trouble for my dark tinteven though I have he has a note and it's registered in his name? I know this works kind of like handicap stickers, the handicap person must be with you to actually be able to park in the handicap spot, but for tint, it's not like I could just peel it off every time I drive it. Just curious to hear your answers and the reactions I could get from the law officers. Thanks....

I'm not a police officer, but I would think this is how it would play out:

You can still get tickets for the tint since you won't have your dad with you, but once you have been given the ticket, you can have your dad go down to the police station and show them the doctor's note and explain the situation to them(tell them that you were driving his car at the time) and they will probably throw the ticket out. But it would be kind of a hassle(for you and your dad) to have to send your dad there every time you got a ticket for the tint.

RS is in the ballpark on this one, except you/dad would have to go to the assigned District Court and show the Prosecuter and/or Judge the citation and Dr.s note.(i'd have it notorized). They are the only ones who can "throw out" a citation. The police Dept. cannot. Since your Dad will not be in the vehicle too often, why not just get your windows tinted right at the legal limit? It will probably save you a future headache. If you really want your windows super dark, go for it but no :cryying: if you get a ticket. Good luck which ever way you go.

Well I have had windows tinted in MI for 9 years now. 22% front 5% back. I have only been given a warning once in Lansing, and that was a whole different story. I have been pulled over a good dozen times by local police in many different cities around here. I always, no matter the weather, roll down both front windows when being pulled over. I have never beyond that one time (long story by a state officer), have been questioned or warned about the tint.

I say go for and dont even worry about it. If you get pulled over just roll them down before the officer approaches the car.

Unfortunately I must live in a city where the police aren't as easy as yours. My dad's truck is tinted pretty dark, but nothing out of the ordinary. He has been given tickets for tint probably 3 or 4 times, and twice was for the tint alone. He wasn't speeding or having any moving violations and was stunned when the officer said he pulled him over just because of his tint. I live in a pretty small town about 10 minutes away from Grand Rapids, and the local law enforcement sometimes likes to flex their power, especially to a young kid in a nice car.

How dark are you going to go with it?? 20% and you didn't say how old you are, but inexperience drivers shouldn't have really dark tint(5%) 20% is pushing it, at night. and It keeps the inside of the car dark in the daytime, I would go with 20% unless your dad needs it darker. You should be able to bs your way out of it if you have the note about your dad you were talking about.

I'm 17 right now, will be 18 in a couple months. I'm not sure percentage wise how dark it will be, I just want it dark enough to not be able to see into. You probably don't happen to know what the darkest legal tint in Michigan I can get do you? On another note, a friend of my says he knows a kid with a dr.'s note for tint, and he got his entire car tinted as dark as possible.....including the windshield. I don't know how this looks, I'm guessing pretty stupid, but he says he's been pulled over 14 times for it. Not worth the hassle in my book, especially if you come at the officer with an attitude, they'll usually find another reason to right you up for something.

If you want it that dark, 20% is pretty dark, I have 28% on my cobra, and you can't see into it at night when cruising. I think the tint on the back window of surburbans and other suv's is about 20% It doesn't look bad either. The legal limit in KS is 35% and I have had 5,20, and 28% on my cars before. I could shoot you an email of my car with 28% if you want on a black car.

I happen to know someone who sounds just like that. He had his escort tinted I believe 5 percent all the way around and most of the windshield as well.

I couldnt imagine doing that. I have a hard time as it is backing out of my driveway at night. My street doesnt have many streetlights. I sometimes roll down the windows to see where the hell I am going.

Good luck
