First off, I am new to the forum, so I thought I
would introduce myself while asking a question. So...hi.

Ok, now on to
the question and the good bits. I recently bought a 03 torch red mach with 94k
miles for a pretty good price. Has a few mods on it - intake, plenum spacer,
midpipe back exhaust, and I bought an SCT
tuner
for it. Everything checked out on the test drive
and it made NO noises and ran like a champ. Fast forward two weeks and I have
developed a rattle/clacking/pining noise and I simply cannot track it down. So,
the lowdown on the noise...

It is most noticeable at 1200 to 2500 rpm
(like most of the Mach's noises). It does it hot or cold, and in any gear. The
noise is most noticeable and can be heard best by feathering the throttle at
those rpms in any gear and getting the engine between a drift/pull. I am almost
certain it is not the timing chain. There is also some of the normal head
tick/noise, but I am almost certain that isn't it either. A few shops said they
thought it might be the main bearings, but weren't sure either. I can press the
clutch in/out and that has no effect on it either. BUT... When you climb
under the car is almost definitely sounds like it is coming from the bell
housing.
I am wanting to pull the tranny but won't get a chance to for a few
months. I would describe the noise as a metal "clacking" more so than a tick or
knock. Once the car warms up and idles down there is NO noise whatsoever. I
would think rods/wrist pin/head tick/main bearings would make some kind of noise
at idle as well - and I am hearing NOTHING.

So, any thoughts? Cracked flywheel? Clutch chatter? Etc.?

Welcome, this is the 99/01 Cobra forum but your Mach is quite similar so there may be some guys who can help. I can't say I've heard any clutch noise out of my car like that though I wouldn't be surprised if it was your clutch. At 94k miles your car could have seen a lot of abuse and there could be broken springs or lose parts on the clutch/plate. Obviously you won't know until you drop the transmission so I would do that as soon as possible.
