New twist in California smog test

I took my car in to get the required biannual smog check so I could have the privilage of paying for another year of registration fees and during the process the tech brought out a palm sized device and placed his hand over it while watching the screen. I asked him what he was doing and he said California now requires his palm print to verify each and every smog check he does!
He had to go in to some EPA center and get palm printed so they would have his print on file and use it to validate each check!

Just when you think California is as kooky as it can get,
wait a minute, it'll get kookier.

WTF? That's a new level of ****ing BS.

I wonder if this guy got busted at some point and that's how they are monitoring him?

I ask because years ago when shops would get in trouble the state would shut them down for XX days and install cameras to monitor them.

But them again I wouldn't put it past the cocksuckers in this state to do some dumb shit like this.

Edit.

I just Googled it and sure enough Komifornia is using these palm scans instead of passwords for their state computer system.

Basically no more techs claiming someone else used their password to perform a test.

What year is your car. I thought I read this only applies to 2000 and newer year cars.

Seriously?

How often does that happen?

Are these being installed in all smog shops?
I know of 2 other shops that had to get the setup we have. Our smog tech has been on vacation for the past couple of weeks so I have had to babysit this system in parts the whole time. Of course we had to pay something like $10K for the privilege.

I must be too old, I don't get it :
.
" The regulations require, in part, Smog Check inspectors to use a biometric palm scanner instead of a password to log in and perform a Smog Check on the BAR On-Board Diagnostic Inspection System (BAR-OIS). "
.
So the smog jockey logs in using the palm scan, how does that force him to:
Do the test ?
Do the test correctly ??
.

This just gives me more of a reason to tell people to get out of that place if you’re an enthusiast. However on that same coin.. Florida is filling up quick. My ride to work used to take 15-20 minutes. It’s now taking 45-60.

I got out of emissions this last week.

The amount of bullshit I’ve learned in 3 years of working in the federal side of it.

I’m done

The 2000 and newer thing is different than this. This sounds like a way to keep track of who's doing the smog test. So if something comes up shady someone can't claim their password was stolen or something.

2000 and newer cars just need to be plugged in and scanned for monitors. There's a 30 second rev test too. 1999 and older need the tail pipe sniffer.

Crazy they still use tail pipe sniffers, especially with it being OBD 2 down to 96. NJ eliminated the tail pipe sniffer and inspections on all 95 and older vehicles. Once they did that all the ratty cars were back on the road. No fenders, messed up lighting systems. Wish I could find something in decent shape that I could drive with out a care in the world.
Off topic: is the jeep trend of no doors moving to other vehicles? I've noticed picks up(non gladiators) with no doors
