We are reminded this week that we are truly citizens of the world. Even though disaster occurred on the other side of the planet, we've all been shocked and saddened by the photos and videos we've seen and stories we've heard of the terrible devastation brought by last Sunday's earthquake and tsunami waves.



As you have certainly learned by now, the initial quake, which struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra Island around 7 a.m. Sunday, measured 8.9 to 9 in magnitude on the Richter scale and triggered enormous tidal waves which swept across the Indian Ocean, striking coastal regions of Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Burma and Malaysia. The number of dead and injured keeps rising, and the rebuilding cost and effort will be huge.



We have heard from a number of our employees who feel compelled to help in some way, and our Executive Committee agrees. Here's what we'd like to do -- let's pool our resources and make a commitment to donate to two of the key organizations working to help mitigate the disaster and rebuild the communities:

If you would like to make a cash (or by check) donation to either of these organizations, the Executive Committee will match your donation. Please send your donations to Pat Wente or Karen Bowers in Corporate Communications in Houston by Friday, January 28th. Make checks payable either to Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) or The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC). If you provide a cash donation, let Corp Comm know which organization you'd like your donation directed to.


You can also go directly to the websites and make a donation using a credit card. If you would like to do that, please print and send your confirmation sheet to Corporate Communications so that your donation can be logged and matched.


We are an organization whose job it is to "put people in houses." It seems only right that we address this unprecedented disaster that has deprived so many families of their homes, loved ones, and livelihoods. Let's do what we can
