what are the signs of a broken motor mount?

Most likely, you'll hear some scrapping/rubbing from inside the vehicle indicating that the engine is moving under torque. The most obvious way I found a broken passenger side mount was to open the hood, get down eye level with the top of the radiator, and check to see if the engine is sitting level. Should be quite obvious from that perspective. Good luck. Replacing them will suck if the engine moves forward on you like it did when I replaced mine.
