What do you guys think of this? I had the motor taken apart finally after blowing a spark plug out of the head last fall. I had a hellacoil(the right one for spark plugs) put in,but it developed a knock.

My mechanic is concered about the lack of carbon build-up on certain areas of the pistons. What could cause that??

Also the head looks like it got damaged. Do you think it should be replaced?

I'm going to look at going forged seeing as though it's apart. Mechanic says the block will be ok,just a hone to clean up...lucky on that.

pic is too small to see anything.

i would still do a .020 overbore to make sure the bores are completely round.

If those are "dings" in the head, chances are it is trash, they will create hot spots and cause all sorts of probs. Plus the valve seats are prob just as beat up. Good luck on the rest of it

could be bad quench, but with the formulaic pattern I don't see that as being likely.

As long as the heads are off, I'd pull the motor and give it a once over with some nice parts.

definitely do a .020 bore on it and make sure it's done on a torque plate.

maybe consider a set of 03/04 heads? Especially if your had might be damaged.

First time posting pics...

This should be better.

Everything is going to the Machine shop today for them to look at.

Has anyone ever seen pistons that look like that?

I'm going to look for some '04 heads..apparently they have more threads for the plugs, maybe I won't lose another and have to go through this again.

And ya, I'm looking into some forged goodies !! Looks like I can get a kit from Modular performance for $1300 for Manley rods, pistons rings etc..

the heads can be welded and should come out fine, but new heads would probably be a good idea for a few reasons.

As for those spots on the piston, that is weird. I haven't seen anything like that. Have you checked the intake valves for straightness?

The whole thing is going to the machine shop...I have never seen anything like it either...looks like it was really lean or something.

If the heads can be repaired by welding, what would be the dissadvantage to that? Would it be safe to run a repaired head and expect a 100,000 miles out of it?

sure.

The cut out the bad part of the head, and fill it in. Probably be cheaper to buy a used set from someone, but it can be done and is reliable.

thanks Quad, what's your advice for a bullet proof bottom end for NA. I may park this for the winter and do a proper rebuild.Thinking FR500 cams/ported 04 heads, ported intake, billet oil gears, forged pistons and rods,mahle/manley. It'll mostly be a weekend car,I plan on keeping the IRS and doing a bunch of suspension mods down the line.

My suggestion would be a big bore 5.0 block
3.7 bore Diamond pistons with a zero dish
manley or diamond H beams (or I beams if you truly plan on staying NA)
Ported 04 heads, that have been milled a touch to bring compression to 11.5 with some custom cams.
Sick shortrunner intake by Boss 330
billet oil gears, fed mogul race bearings
maybe some crank lightening
and gear the piss out of it.

Not cheap, but with the right mods, I bet you get to about 480rwhp

hmm, probably about 4400 for the shortblock
800 for the shortrunner
about 3300 in the head package
then all the extras, youd probably be at about 10k when all is said and done

I'd be able to use my current block wouldn't I?

would '03 tank and pumps be adequate? Would I need bigger injectors?

10K US..Hope the loonie stays strong.

thanks for the input it is greatly appreciated.
