What's up guys, long story short I recently got a modified exhaust ticket and got sent to a state reff if I wanted to get it corrected. I emailed borla if their aggressive or stinger catback was 50state legal and they said yes since it didn't remove any emission devices.I live in southern california. So my question is it really legall to have on the car?
Thanks

The two things that suck about Cali: auto and gun laws. Hope someone has some good advice for you.

Use the search function for the DS on "exhaust tickets". Read some. The answers will be there. Not all exhausts are 50 state legal even though the manufacturers think that they are. Take my state, VA, for example. ANY exhaust that emits more noise than the factory exhaust is illegal. Good Luck.

Catbacks are legal for emissions purposes, as the cat converters aren't moved from their stock location. The problem arises in the statutory issue of noise compliance generally.

CA Vehicle Code said:
27150. (a) Every motor vehicle subject to registration shall at all
times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and
properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise, and
no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass,
or similar device.

27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor
vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted
by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance
with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits
established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with
Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an
exhaust system so modified.
(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor
vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less
than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or
less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers
Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle
exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to,
nonoriginal exhaust equipment.

Damn, this sucks
it is what happens when you modify your car and dont pay attention to the laws. you wind up getting caught and then have to change things back.

Edit: I use the term "you" editorally and not in reference to any specific person place or thing.

One quick question for you LEOs. What test do state reffs do? Do they check for what the citation was given out for or do they do visual, sniffer etc

They will usually go with verifying the correction of the section cited, but don't go unless you are legit in every obvious regard...
