mechanical water temp gage

I've searched, but still need some help...

96 Cobra.

I'm trying to install an Autometer mechanical water temp gage. First I tried to install it where the factory gage sending unit goes, but none of the included adapters will work. Is there a better place to install the probe, or do I need to search for an adapter that will work. If possible I would like to keep the factory gage working as well, but if that is where the best place is I don't have a problem with removing it. Also where is it most important to be reading the water temp at? (would the cross over tube be sufficient or does it need to be at the block?)

When I had my '03 and was looking into putting a water temp gauge in -- I saw a lot of people mounting the sending unit in the crossover tube. I think it should be fairly accurate.
