Might not be the best section for this, as its not really related to a law, but I figured an officer might know the answer.

I was looking on the secretary of state website last night and they have the neat 'pick a plate' thing where you can see if vanity/personalized plates are available. Now I know here in Illinois, we have just standard plates, but we also have specialty ones that some funds go to different organizations or whatever. I selected one of the specialty plates and typed in the current plate I have and it said it was availalbe. I'm not sure if this is because the enviromental and prevent violence plates have automatic letters on them.

Anyone know anything about this? Thinking about getting another SHO and thought it would be sweet to have the same plates for both cars.

your best bet is probably to call the DMV in your area and ask them

Ya, iv been on a few ride-alongs (in Texas though) and im quite sure the officer radios in the state and digits only, not the type/organization..

In CT., they have several different tage types, and you can have the same tag on several vehicles. When a cop reports the tag they are supposed to say which type.

There are no non-commercial plates that transfer between vehicles. Additionally, plates that transfer between vehicles, such as dealer tags, are registered as such and come back with that indication when run.

So, you are saying there will be multiple sets of plates, used on multiple vehicles at the same time, showing the same identifying numbers (e.g. X90 35G)?

The new IN plate is on the left.
I have not seen any, but you MAY be able get the same letter/number on the 3 plates on the right. They will use different letters on the same plate.
Here are links to the IN plates.

They arent the same number/letter combination, as the first two letters assigned to the plate are included in the plate registration.

If your talking about the QB on the Colts plate, the HV on the Veterans, ect.
Not all the Colts plates use QB, not all the Veterens plates use HV. If they all had the same QB, HV ect that would limit the plate run to 10,000 plates.

When I have called people in, I have had to tell 911 what plate it is.

That is correct, the QB is not the only two letter designation for that style plate. However, there will always be a two letter indicator that makes the following numbers unique.

Why is this such a difficult concept? The series of numbers/letters will never be the same.

If the larger alphanumerics are 00RT5, that may many plates, but each set of plates will have either letters or numbers preceeding the alphanumerics that make that set of plates unique.
