She does it because it's what keeps her publicity alive. She can't rely on talent alone in order to keep her popularity up, so she just gave up and went full potato. This move is cliche.

Pretty much every generation has an "artist" or two that pushes the boundaries of decency. Most celebrities tap dance on the line of what it acceptable and what it reprehensible but Miley has pole vaulted over it. She's truly a disgusting human being.

Everyone seems to care about her little video here. thats really my point, she's managed to become relevant way outside her target demographic.
Madonna was definitely pretty bad for her time.

She exposed herself
She published a book of self nudes
Cursed a lot during "professional" live interviews
Had videos banned on not VH1 and MTV
The list goes on, but Madonna was definitely an out there bad girl. She was probably the first to be really good at it during a time where rebellious actions were becoming a movement and she wasn't doing to save a career. Her career came from it.
