soon as the 8.9 popped up it was like all hell broke loose, much like what happened in real life.

****ing crazy!

at least geologists now know what to look for, when a series of quakes like that hits a focused area for about a day straight, and then nothing for a few hours (letting fault pressures build up), it could mean a big one is building up.

Look at the timestamp, time is in hours not minutes or seconds.

Those quakes did some crazy damage. Sea-floor rift is 50 miles wide, over 200 miles long, shifted some of Japan's beaches by up to 8 feet, changed Earth axis by 4 inches and sped up our rotation.

Worst of all, it sank parts of Japan and some of the cities that are inundated may not (naturally) return back to normal...

As a geologist, I'll say it again (and i quote)...

"Civilization exist by geological consent, subject to change without notice."

It is tragic and terrible to loose so many people, homes, etc. But folks need to understand that the recent earthquake activity in that region is normal. It's a triple-junction, active plate boundary. Nothing new. It has happened before and will happen again.

Thanks for the google earth link! I'll share that with other geologist here at work.

That animation gave me the chills!

"Civilization exist by geological consent, subject to change without notice."

A dark reality indeed and yet so many natural disasters we've yet to experience in our lifetimes. The history of our planet is insane.

Has there ever been that many earthquakes in one area in that time period?
