intermittent shifting issue

ok. im having a shifter issue i cant track down. 2-3 shift at high rpm(6200+) the car will stay locked in 2nd gear but the shifter will go to neutral. if i try to heel toe down 3-2 it does the same ocassionally. even when im not shifting hard it will do this from time to time. in 2nd gear i have exccessive play, i can move the shifter around a few inches, so far so to the left i can hear a metallic grind when rolling along. but the car never has a grind in shifts so i dont thinks its the synros.

anyone have any ideas?

Best Mod to date was a Mgw shifter....i could go go 2-3 at the track without letting the rpms come down...thing bangs gears now.....dont think it could miss if i tried
