I have a '96 GT with an intermitant speedometer. I've pulled the intrument cluster and have cleaned all the connectors, but it has not helped. Is there a speed sensor somewhere that sends the signal to the speedometer that I can check?

The VSS is located on the side of the transmission. Your speedo gears may be in need of replacing if you are running steeper gears.
