Doctors:
(A) The number of doctors in the U.S. is 700,000
(B) Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000
(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 17.14%

Statistics courtesy of the U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services

Guns:
(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000 (yes that's 80 million)
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500
(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.001875%

Statistics courtesy of the FBI

So statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, guns don't kill people, doctors do.

Not everyone has a gun, but almost everyone has at least one doctor.
Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, we have withheld statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention.

Yes stats are fun and swing both ways.

purposeful death caused by physicians per year are 0

EDIT: don't get me wrong, I'm a gun owner. I just think those stats are completely useless. On top of that, you can't justify a wrong with a wrong.

I would warrant they are quite accurate for my purpose of showing you how stats can cut both ways :)

my low and your low are probably a lot different is all I'm saying.

Well consider this-

when's the last time you heard a doctor purposefully killing someone while practicing medicine

and then

when's the last time you heard someone was shot and killed by a gun?

its nigh impossible for me to find any sort of meaningful statistic showing doctor's stats, but the CDC lists 29,237 firearm deaths due to criminal intent.

let's assume there were 10 doctor deaths, and we will use the 2002 stats from the CDC of 29,237.

10/700,000= 1.4285714285714285714285714285714e-5 (that's a small number)
29,237/80,000,000=0.0003654625

you have a much higher chance of being shot and killed by a gun than having a doctor kill you purposefully. still a small chance, yes, but when you directly compare the two like your chain email/net gem does, its obvious on the basis of sheer comparison.

Dr Kevorkian is probably the last doctor I heard that was caught "purposefully" killing someone. Doesn't matter though, because the article was about ACCIDENTAL deaths!!

And again...It was a joke! :poke:

well, if you're going to base the danger of fire arms solely on the amount of accidental death, then fine. But there are way mroe deaths inherent. I don't think you understood what I meant by that comment. your analysis is flawed.

..

Chance of being hurt by an accident would be number of accidents divided by the total population, not number of accidents divided by the cause.

So, its hould be more like this.....

number of accidental deaths caused by doctors/number of people who have visited doctors in that year

number of accidental deaths caused by guns/number of people who have handled guns that year

No, I gave my 2 weeks notice at work and they want me to finsih it out instead of cutting me loose. I'm bored...but nonetheless, it was a joke and some of these guys are serious about it. :kaboom:

oh yea, SVTHorsnake, I am guessing your avatar is from the Persian flag? Is that correct? I lived in Iran for a couple of years in the 70's, just outside Isfahan.
