changing oil in the Cobra today. filled new filter with oil before reinstalling. I forgot to put the rest of the oil in. ran it for around 3 minutes before realizing my goof. I never drove the car, just idle to make sure no leaks. Damage done?

I took it for a little drive through the country after filling the rest of the oil, no strange sounds, and felt really smooth. The car always gets Mobil 1 Full Synthetic.

thoughts?

3 minutes probably isn't long enough to hurt too much, especially at idle. IMO

Yeah no biggie. There's not enough pressure on the bearings at idle to hurt anything as long as they aren't dry. There's still oil film on the bearings unless it was without oil for years.

You should be fine.. like Tyler72 said there's still some oil on the bearings etc, that engine would have to be bone dry for serious damage.

Ought to be good at idle. Impossible to get ALL the oil out of your engine during a change. It's stuck to just about everything. THANKFULLY!

next time pull the pull cap first. that way if you forget you see the oil cap off before you start it. but after this you probably wont forget again, lol. i always check my dipstick before starting it.

here is my obsessive way of doing it:
pull oil cap
drain oil, let it drain excessively long.
pit bolt back in
clean stuffs
oil filter
fill oil filter and install
check to make sure everything it tight/installed
fill oil, wait 5 min check oil with dipstick
start car for 20-30 secionds, kill it
check oil again.
drive for a day and check AGAIN and look for leaks.
