I lived in Tampa from 2001-2005 (near MacDill AFB). The majority of the time I was there I had no issues at all. However, in 2004 I think like 3 hurricanes came through. Only had to evacuate for one. I just went to the interior of Tampa. A buddy of mine went to Orlando. Hurricane passed south of Tampa and went right through Orlando. Sucked for my buddy, but I laughed about it because he took such drastic measures trying to avoid it. It really sucks when you go to the store and the shelves are bare. I lived in an apartment on the second floor and didn't have a house or insurance to worry about. However, when the all clear is given and you go back to your residence and have no power for a few days, that sucks too. All kinds of debris in the parking lot (i.e. tree branches, peoples lawn furniture, etc.). Looking like a damn war zone. Florida is a great state to live in, but I don't think I could deal with the potential of having my property wiped off the face of the Earth or severely damaged every few years when reports like this come through. I like living in El Paso. No hurricanes, tornados, floods, Earthquakes or anything that can ruin my life in a few hours. And I can always go visit Florida whenever I want LOL. Hope everything works out for those of you in the path of this thing. Been there done that and wish you well.
