I took the tranny cover off and pounded on the guide tube with a rubber mallet but it wouldn't budge. I was reluctant to get more aggressive with it for fear of damaging something. Does this need to be pressed out on an arbor press? How about installation of the new Mcleod guide tube? Does this need to be pressed in or what?

I thought I would try something myself before taking it to an outside shop. Just for the record, here is how I did it: I put the cover with the stock tube into my oven at 350*F. Aluminum expands more with heat than steel so I thought heating would loosen it some. I took it out of the oven and wrapped a bag if ice around the tube for about a minute. Then I hit it with a leather mallet and out it came! To get the new piece in, I put the tube in the freezer and the aluminum cover back in the oven. Using a 1-1/4" pipe reducer with a plug in it as a tool to hammer on, I was able to seat the new tube perfectly.
