My keys were taken from where I work today. Two questions.

1. I have to go to work tomorrow and I need to know what is the easiest way to disable the car to keep whoever has the key from stealing it.

2. I am off Friday and need to get new keys. What does that entail and any ideas on approximate cost.

2. When I got a spare for my car, it was something like $20 per key and $40 to tune it. Each new key has to be programmed to the car by the dealer.

cost - prolly a couple hundred bucks

best way to keep your car from being stolen? take out the plugs and put the covers back on.

you do realize your keys will show up 15 minutes after you get the new set made right?

1) Easiest is the fuel cutoff switch in the trunk. Red button on left side of trunk. If you think whoever has the key knows about mustangs, just disconnect the pumps. Reach under the rear bumper by the A, and you can feel the plug.

2) Quite a bit. If you want to do things the right way, you're going to have to get three lock tumblers replaced, the ignition, and the PCM reprogrammed. That's going to be expensive. Replacing just the key can run you $10 if you already have two keys up to over $100 if you only have one since the dealer or a locksmith has to program it for the PATS system.

2. It cost me ~$15 for a blank transponder key and $60 to program a car and cut 3 keys (not all for the same car) from a local lock smith. I was quoted $90 just to program at a local dealer. Did not include the key or cutting a key.

I am going to get it done the right way. I'm not worried about the expense. I'm going to drive my wifes car to work tomorrow and I'm hoping that whoever took it just forgot to turn it in and it will show up.

I was under the impression that I had to go the dealer route to get this taken care of but from your response a regular locksmith can do this?

Thanks for the info

Call around and you will find a local specialist that can come to you and make/program new keys for way less than any dealer.

If you ever find the old ones after the car has been re-programed, make sure to toss them. I tore my car apart one time wondering why it wouldn't start only to realize after hours of work that I was using an old key.

Won't the missing key still be able to unlock the doors and trunk? They wouldn't be able to drive off but they could go through your stuff.

I don't know if a regular locksmith can take care of rekeying the doors/trunk and ignition. Many can program an extra key though. They just need to have the PATS equipment.

That's why I said earlier he would need to get the doors/drunk rekeyed in addition to the ignition.
