Last month I participated in a ½ mile airstrip event for the second time in my bolt on 2012 Mustang GTCS. The previous year I was running a different 93 tune, stock all season tires and the interior was removed (175 lbs removed). This time I had an AED tune, Michelin super sports and left everything in the car down to the floor mats. At the previous event radar guns were used (highly inaccurate method) but I had my pbox on board and based on it I averaged a 136mph trap. This year my pbox data gave me an average 138mph trap which was very close to the measurements by the laser trap system used at the event this time, no more police with radar guns, you got a time slip for each pass this year! My best last year was a 138, this year was a 141.

So the 2mph trap increase clearly shows the tune and tire made a difference DESPITE being nearly 200 pounds heavier. Anyway, here is some data from some other vehicles that were there just to give an idea about how our 5.0s stack up to other cars in a roll race for ½ a mile.

Averages
2012 GTCS (tune/exhaust) 137.94mph
2012 Camaro SS (H/C/I/E/dyno tune) 138.11mph
2012 Challenger R/T (Bolton) 123.71mph
2012 ZL1 141.57mph
2007 Charger SRT8 (TT) 148.01mph
Jaguar XKR (510 stock hp land yacht) 138.03mph
2005 Roush GT (S/C) 129.71mph
2006 Cadillac CTS-V 138.23mph
2009 G8 GXP 130.89mph
2012 Mustang GT (bone stock) 125.74mph
2007 G35 Coupe (Bolton) 119.61mph
2010 STI 125.92mph
1999 C5 nitrous 131.95mph
2007 GT500 133.66mph
2009 GT500 (bolts/pulley) 155.72mph
2012 Mustang GT (bolts/nitrous) 157.65mph
2011 Camaro SS (bolts/nitrous) 148.54mph

Anyway, there are the averaged results for some various cars all participating at the same track in the same conditions on the same day. The best traps were a TT Gallardo that did 186mph and two monster GT-Rs did 183mph and 179mph.

Forgot to point out that on some of these cars I was unsure of mods so I didn't list anything, but that doesn't mean they were necessarily stock.

Yeah, the white gtr had some carbon fiber parts, nice looking I believe that was the tag. Nice guy was very impressive.

The event is held in Carrabelle FL every year, there is one in GA and Chicago as well.

wish they had it around here.
sounds fun.

Not sure where exactly you are in TN, but they'll be having an event in North GA the end of Sept or Oct if I remember correctly.

Depending on whats going on, I may pony up the $200 to enter.

***Edit, looks like it's Sept 14th 15th.

I have been trying to decide to run it. My friend has that gtr and wants me to go.

I don't have a trailer or anything if I break the car

It just amazes me how much faster cars are in the first 1/4.

It's simply because as you accelerate you cover ground more quickly. When you start the second 1/4 mile and your already going 120 it's going to be tough to increase much more then 20 mph without a serious power adder.

It is a good time, racing, talking with people with the same passion and getting to see cars and races that otherwise you might not, getting to watch a TT Gallardo slingshot down the airstrip was awesome.

I hear the GA event is even better because the private airstrip is much nicer and nicer scenery.

As far as the traps, like a previous poster pointed out the initial velocity at the 1/4 mile point means you have a very reduced time to pick up more speed on the big end, and drag is exponential with speed.
