I'll admit it. I'm looking at an 01 red lightning because the woman says we need a truck. So instead of me buying a slow ass Silverado SS i'm looking at an L. My question is. How tough is the 5.4L? If i go with a Whipple or KB in the future. Will i need to build the engine? What kind of numbers are the Twin screw guys putting down?

The Lightning Can Handle Something Around 500 Hp On The Stock Block. With A Kb Or Whipple, You Can Safely Boost 14 Pounds And Lots Of Boltons.

Are the L's reliable? Any problems? One i'm looking at looks stock but L's are rarely stock. What is the weak link in the L's?

I haven't had any problems with mine.
The 99s had issues with the intercooler pump and the fuel pump.
01/02 has 4 threads to hold the plugs so they can spit plugs if not checked.
Someone else will shed more light hopefully. Stock Ls are rare.

I ran 15# of KB on a stock block with no problems, but you need to find a very good tuner... It is all in the tune...
