Hey guys,

I installed a metco 4lb lower yesterday. It looks like the hub/pulley has a slight wobble at idle. Once I rev the rpms up a little it looks like it's gone.

Can anyone confirm if this is normal? I did a search on this but found nothing.

I got video of it but it's crappy, I'll try getting another one.

Otherwise I don't really want to, but I'll throw the stock lower back on.

Thanks.

I don’t recall anything off on mine

But will fire it up tomorrow and look again.

Mounting bracket may have something behind it

I recall that being a bit tight going into main pulley where I’m going to have a fun time taking it out if needed

Thanks. Why pulley ring went in the hub easily.

Mines solid too. It’s worth noting that I went through a number of tensioners on my car after installing the 4lb lower years ago. Come to find out the issue was with the Metco hub, which was on the high side of their tolerance levels that was throwing the belt alignment off. Metco fixed the issue and it’s been trouble free for many years. Something worth noting while you troubleshoot.

I bought this kit new from a guy on Facebook. I believe it's a older style metco kit. The bracket itself is solid and doesn't say metco on it. No machined area either like I've seen some.

Maybe I'll contact Metco and see what they say.

Kinda hard to tell in video. Looks worse in person.

I see it. Could definitely be the hub. It may be worth removing and measuring with some calipers.

I can definitely see a wobble in the second vid. I would first check the torque on the hardware holding the pulley to the hub to see if anything backed off. From there I would loosen everything and re-tighten it properly. If it still wobbles I'd get a dial indicator on it and spin the engine over by hand to see if I could pinpoint the area that's causing it.

Yes you are correct Metco lower pulleys are NOT self centering. I've installed 3 of these over the years, my own car was the first and by far the worst, and all 3 had to be tapped in to center. Mine had .058" of play, the second one had .020" play and the last had .038" play. The second install on my friend's car with only .020" play looked good after install (could not see a wobble while running) until we checked it using a dial indicator and found it had .020 play (.010 each direction). That might have been ok but my friend wanted it better like mine. So I tapped each of them into center to less than .001". The centering process is a pain in the butt. You need to keep loosening the bolts, gently tapping the pulley in, locking the bolts back down, rotating the crank with the indicator on and finding the high spot and the repeating the process till the total indicator reading was less than .001". Good Luck it's easy it just takes time.

That's some damn good info. You would think with the cost of the part this wouldn't be an issue.

I swear my 4 pound caged lower had a wobble but it didn't shread any belts and seems to be fine. Very similar looking to your vids and hard to see on camera. Not a Metco but thought I'd share

Thanks. I was told the same thing by a couple other people.

Measure the run out. I measured several stockers and a couple of the 4lb lowers and the run out was less on the 4lb because they were tighter tolerance than stamped steel ones. A certain amount comes from the bearing and is amplified by the larger diameter pulley.

I would pick a dial indicator in a magnetic base always good to have something like that on hand anyway that way you know what you're at
